Gist gained the majority of his scars during The Aether War, the most unfortunate strike being the one to his face, blinding his left side. (His right eye is pale blue in color and fully functional). 
Gist's appearance often betrays his good nature, his outer shell might appear tough but in reality, he's a social dragon that enjoys his companions. Seeing him traveling alone is a rare sight to behold. 

Gist was born deaf, he communicates telepathically, by body language and through manipulation of the environment around him.
